Assigned reading due 10/13: (on-line) excerpt from George Fredrickson, Racism: A Short History (Princeton, rev. ed. 2015) (here). Be sure to read this short (8 page) except on-line, as I’ve embedded hints and definitions of words that you might not know. The reading is straightforward, but it is subtle and so will require close attention to answer the questions (see below)

assigned viewing due 11/02:  first 20 minutes of the 1991 film Black Robe (extra-credit quiz at start of class on this viewing; you will be watching the rest of the film for the upcoming paper.  But getting started on the film now will save you time then AND provide some visual context for the reading.  Often, having a visual sense of a setting can help you process a reading about a very different time and place)
